The tragic end for a Returned Digger of The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
92 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 17th February 1930, Private John Tully, 35th Battalion (Reg No-574), miner from 71 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and Convalescent Home, Moree, N.S.W. and 73 Corlette Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of four (John Jnr, Andrew, Peter, Hannah), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 56. CATHOLIC 1-20. 37.
Born at Liverpool, United Kingdom about 1874 to Michael and Hannah Tully; husband of Margaret (Marguerite) Tully nee Tyrer (married? died 16.10.1929, sleeping here), John enlisted February 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W. (age about 42).
Admitted to hospital 6.1.1917 (fractured ribs).
John returned home July 1917, being discharged medically unfit (fractured ribs & overage) on the 28th November 1917.
Mrs. Tully's brother James Tyrer (53rd Battalion, Reg No-3473, died 3.2.1925, also resting at the cemetery - METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 5 SE. 8.) has been wounded.
Welcomed home and presentation of medal at the Oddfellow's Hall by the Newcastle Mothers' Club.
I have not located Mr. Tully’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
