Ned was the eleventh of thirteen children of William Charles Buckby (born 1856 in Brisbane, QLD) and Charlotte Mary O'Sullivan (born 1862 in Tipperary, Ireland). Charlotte arrived in Brisbane, QLD in April 1869 on board the Young Australia). William - a Labourer and Wood Cutter - and Charlotte married in 1880 in Charters Towers, QLD where they settled and raised their family.

Ned was working as a Stockman and Drover in Charters Towers, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in February 1918. He served as a Private (Service No:52976) with 41st Battalion and Australian Base Camp in France. He was Discharged in September 1919. Four of Ned's brothers also served in WWI - Harvey James (Private; Service No:2345), James Alfred (Shoeing Smith/Private; Service No:250), Patrick Dennis (Private; Service No:5336) and David (Private; Service No:903).

Ned worked in Charters Towers as a Fireman before moving to Longreach where he was a 'Windmill Expert'. In the late 1920's he was living in Ayr, QLD and working at the Inkerman Mill as a Labourer. Ned travelled to Spain and joined the International Brigade fighting in the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1938) - many Australians could not state their intention before leaving Australia for fear of not receiving their passports.

Ned returned from Spain and was living at Kurukan Siding in Thuringowa, QLD where he was an Orchardist in the late 1930's. He died in Sydney, NSW in 1979
