Son of Andrew of Simonsen and Janet Simonsen nee Moss of River Street, Ascot Vale, Victoria. Brother of George Simonsen who returned to Australia on 20 May 1919 having served with the 4th and 13th Light Horse Regiments

During 1920c James married Catherine Annie Ross in Victoria. Father of James Ross Simonsen

Commenced return to Australia on 28 February 1919 aboard HT Anchises disembarking on the 17 April 1919
