Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

4060 Private Arthur Henry Beddows, 17th Battalion, of Sydney, NSW was born and raised in Fiji where his father owned a coconut plantation. He attended Levuku Public School and was a clerk with the Commission of Works Department, Fiji, prior to enlisting in October 1915. Pte Beddows, and his brother 4061 Pte George John Beddows, also 17th Battalion, enlisted the same day and had consecutive regimental numbers. Arthur Beddows was killed in action at Bullecourt, France, on 3 May 1917, aged 23 years of age. His brother 4061 Corporal George John Beddows was killed in action at Villers- Bretonneux in July 1918, aged 25.

George made the following statement in Arthur’s Red Cross file, “A.H. Beddows was my brother. For some months I have made careful enquiries about him and have come to the conclusion that he was blown up during an attack at Bullecourt on May 3rd and not seen again. We had attacked and been repulsed so that it would be difficult to trace bodies.”
