Sincere regret will be expressed on the West Coast at the sad news of the death of Major William Johnstone Knox of the Australian Field Artillery, who died of wounds received in France on August 20.
Major Knox was the son of the late Mr. William Knox (member for Kooyong in the Federal Parliament, and a member of the Mount Lyell Board), and was a well-known member of the Stock Exchange of Melbourne. He left Australia as a lieutenant, and fought on Gallipoli. Only a few weeks ago he was awarded the Military Cross. Two of his brothers, Lieutenant Colonel J. H. Knox and Captain Macgregor Knox, M.C., are at the front.
An adjournment over the first meeting was made by the Stock Exchange of Melbourne on Thursday morning was of respect to the memory of Major W J. Knox, M.C. Major Knox was a member of the Stock Exchange for eight years. The chairman (Mr. W. J. Roberts), after expressing the affectionate regard of members for their late colleague, said that Major Knox possessed all the characteristics of a soldier. By the sacrifice he had made, Major Knox had brought honor to his family, his old school, the Scotch College, and to the Stock Exchange.
The late Major Knox some months before the war visited the West Coast, and inspected the chief mining properties of this portion of Tasmania. He made several friends locally and elsewhere in the State, for his was a fine nature, which attracted men, and made life happier for many.
