Recommended for a D.C.M awarded a M.M. "During the whole of operations on Broodseinde Ridge east of Ypres on the 4 October 1917, this NCO did splendid work under heavy shell fire prior to the attack. He kept his men well in hand and on his platoon commander becoming a casualty, he organized his men skillfully for the attack and maintained good direction throughout.
