James Joseph Carter (Reg No 10225) was the son of Thomas Carter, born in County Clare, Ireland. Thomas Carter (Senior) came from a farming background, born in 1865 to parents Bartholomeus and Annie Carter. In 1883 he emigrated to Australia, departing Plymouth on the 14th July on the Dharewar and arriving in Sydney 8th October 1883. He married Hannorah “Norah” Kennedy on 17th May 1890 and they went to live in Thorpdale. By 1905 he had taken up land at Allambee South being Lots 80B and 80C off the now Grand Ridge Road and Lot 78B along the West Branch of the Tarwin River where he built the family home; described as a 5 roomed weatherboard dwelling “out of repair” (Probate 1925). He later took up additional land being subdivisions of Lot 78 along the West Branch of the Tarwin River and Lot 79 (1915 Allambee East Parish Map). The bridge over the West Branch of the Tarwin, adjacent to the Carter property is referred to as Carter’s Bridge even at this time (Gippsland and Mirboo Times 14th Jan 1915 Pg 2.

Following training he embarked from Melbourne, on board HMAT A54 Runic on 20 June 1916 arriving in Plymouth 10th August, before proceeding to France. James returned to Australia in November 1918 for discharge due to ill health. Following his discharge he worked as farmer, initially Allambee South (1924) and later at Allambee Reserve (1931). In 1934 he is listed as a carrier living in Mirboo North. In 1942 he married Edith Mary Spratling and they moved to Newborough. Edith died in July 1980 and James the following year in June 1981.
