Biography contributed by John Oakes

Leonard ROBINSON, (Service Number 1079) was born on 31st August 1886 at Macclesfield, England. He worked as a labourer in the Permanent Way Branch at Lismore from 3rd February 1913 and four months later progressed to fettler. It was from this role that he was given leave to join the Expeditionary Forces on 5th February 1916. In fact, Robinson had enlisted at Lismore on 6th January so the granting of leave by the Railways was the acceptance of what had already occurred. He was not married and gave his father, Charles, living in England, as his next of kin.

Initially he was allotted to the 1st Reinforcements to the 41st Battalion. He embarked HMAT ‘Demosthenes’ at Sydney on 17th May 1916 and reached Devonport on 20th July 1916. In September he proceeded overseas to France and was transferred to the 49th Battalion on 20th October.

He was wounded in action with a gunshot penetrating his abdomen on 31st March 1917. He was admitted to the 5th Australian Field Ambulance where he died of those wounds the same day.

He was buried at the Pozières British Cemetery on the Albert-Bapaume Road, ½ mile SW of Pozières 3½ miles NE of Albert.
