Son of Joseph Greenough and Henrietta Greenough nee Davis of Manchester, England. Brother of William Greenough who returned to Australia on 16 December 1917 having served with the 4th Pioneer Battalion.

Husband of Helen Greenough nee Adams of Turner Street, Rusholme, Manchester, England. Arthur and Helen were married on 12 March 1918 in the Chorlton Registry Office, Manchester, England. A.A.H. Ramsbottom officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 1 July 1919 ab oard HT Frankfurt disembarking on 20 August 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane
