Sylvester Alfred WYNN was born on 29th April, 1879 in Harpurhey, Manchester, England

His parents were Joseph WYNN and Ellen McDONALD who married in 1876 in Liverpool, England

He married Ethel May HAYES in  1913 in Liverpool, UK and emigrated to Australia with his wife Ethel on 25th September 1913 on the ship Omrah

He had previously served for eleven and a half years with the 9th Mississanga Horse Regiment in Canada & after arrival in Australia enlisted for WW1 on 25th August, 1914 as a Squadron Sergeant with the 1st Light Horse Regiment ( B Squadron) which embarked from Sydney on HMAT Star of Victoria on 20th October, 1914

He was wounded at the Gallipoli Peninsula on 7th August, 1915 & taken to hospital - subsequently sent back to Australia on 24th June 1916 on the ship Euripedes for Home Service and landed in Melbourne on 5th August, 1916

He was discharged on 15th January, 1917 & in 1918 was appointed an area officer with the Commonwealth Military Forces

His final rank was a Squadron Sergeant Major before his discharge but his obituary mentions he was a Captain but no details of his promotion to Captain are available

Sylvester died at Glebe in Sydney on 18th January, 1934 and was cremated at Northern Suburbs Crematorium, North Ryde

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal

His son Sylvester Murray WYNN (SN24779) served in WW2 & died on 4th February 1943 of Illness in New Guinea

Captain S.A. WYNN

The death occurred at Glebe last week of Captain Sylvester A. Wynn.  Captain Wynn who was born in England, devoted much of his life to military activities.  As a boy he went to Canada and before the war served in the 9th Mississanga Horse Regiment and was present at the Coronation ceremony of King George.

He was an amateur boxing and wrestling champion in Canada and a prominent sculler.  He later returned to England and then came to Australia in 1913.  He was amongst the first to enlist for active service in August, 1914 and was appointed Sergeant Major in the 1st Light Horse Regiment

He was shot through the mouth at the foot of Popes Hill, Gallipoli in 1915 and was returned to Australia in 1916.

In 1918 he was appointed an area officer with the Commonwealth Military Forces and worked in the interests of returned soldiers and was president of the 1st Light Horse Association for 12 years and a member of the New South Wales Lancers Association.  He is survived by Mrs. Wynn, one son and three daughters.

The funeral took place on Saturday at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.  The Rev Mr. Chapman of the Chatswood Congregational Church officiated
