REV. J. W. WARD
The death occurred on Saturday, March 26 in England, of the Rev.John William Ward, aged 64, whose indifferent health for some time caused him to resign the living of Newdigate Church of England some few months ago. Archdeacon Ward, as he was known in Goulburn, had a long and useful career in the diocese of, Goulburn before spending the last few years in England. A young man he came out to Australia as chaplain, to Bishop Barlow, and went to Queensland. He was ordained deacon in 1896 and priest in 1898, by Bishop Barlow, who was then Bishop of North Queensland. He served curacies in Queensland.at Hughenden 1896 to 1897, and at the St. James' Cathedral, Townsville, from 1898 to 1899, and again from 1900 to 1902. For part of 1899 and 1900 he was curate of Crouch End, London. Coming south with Bishop Barlow he served in this diocese as domestic chaplain to the bishop from 1902 to 1913, and as minor canon of the St. Saviour's Cathedral from 1902 to 1913. From 1911 to 1913 he was precentor, and was registrar of the diocese from 1908 until 1913. Archdeacon Ward held a commission in the Commonwealth Militia forces as chaplain from 1911 to 1927. In 1913 he was moved to Cooma, where he completely restored the church, and refurnished it as no other, church is furnished in the diocese. He remained at Cooma for eight years.
During the Great War he was on active service from 1916 until 1918. From 1913 until 1921 he served as archdeacon of Monaro, and from 1921 as archdeacon. of Goulburn for six years. From 1920 he was Vicar-General and administrator of the diocese, and in 1921 he came back to Goulburn, and was made Vlce-Dean of the Cathedral and incumbent of the Cathedral parish from 1921 to 1927. In 1927 he resigned and returned to England, where he took the rectorship of Newdigate for ten years from 1927.
Archdeacon Ward was a priest of considerable ability and character, who left his mark by his sterling work in the diocese over many years, while his faithful pastoral work will be remembered wherever he worked. While in Australia he married Miss Marjorlie Chisholm, daughter of Dame Alice, and the late, Mr William Chisholm, of Merrilla. Besides his widow, who is still in Somerset, he is survived by a family of two boys and one girl. His eldest son John, is at present in Australia. A requiem memorial eucharist will be celebrated in the St. Saviour's Cathedral on Wednesday, March 30, when the Vicar-General, Archdeacon Pike, will deliver the address.
