Walter Francis Ryland joined the AIF on 10 September 1915 at the young age of 18 years 7 months and survived the war, he  was discharged on 20 February 1918. In 1919 he became Registered Player Number 0561 at VFA club Port Melbourne and went on to play in 26 senior games.
