Jacob Arthur Grigg was born on 6 December 1874 in Williamstown, South Australia to William Parkyn and Isabella Grigg (nee Semple).

Jacob was the fourth of eight children. His siblings were Herbert Hugh, Alfred George, Edith Jessie, Adam Semple, Joseph Percival, William Edwin and Horace Isaac.

The Grigg brothers were well known for their athleticism in football and cycling.

Jacob married Emma Yeatman and they had no children.

Jacob died on 25 February 1949 at his residence in Williamstown and is buried at the Williamstown Cemetery.
