Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

When Alan Douglas McNeill was born in 1890 in Tasmania, his father, Joseph, was 64 and his mother, Helen, was 41. He had three brothers and six sisters. His father passed away during 1910. His mother lived in Hobart.

His older brother 4062 Lce. Cpl. David James McNeill 47th Battalion AIF had been killed in action at Mouquet Farm in 1916, aged 32.

Alan had previously been wounded in action during the Battle of Menin Road in Belgium with a gunshot wound to the back and chest on 21 September 1917. He was evacuated to England to recover and had only rejoined the 1st Field Company Engineers a fortnight before he was killed in action. He was out on a wiring party when he was hit by shell fragments. Another man of his unit Lce. Cpl E.F.H. Frings was also killed by the same shell.
