He was 34 and the son of James Alfred and Mary Ann Fordham. Born at Muckingford, [Mucking], Essex, England.

Died on this date – 24th February…… Alfred James Fordham was born in 1883 in Mucking Ford, Essex, England.

Information provided by Nora Warren, sister of Alfred James Fordham, for the Roll of Honour states that Alfred Fordham came to Australia when he was 25 & he was a “Fireman on Board a Ship”.

Alfred James Fordham enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 27th September, 1917 as a 34 year old, single, Labourer from Newcastle, NSW. He stated on his Attestation Papers that he had previously served with Royal Marine Light Infantry & was discharged due to an accident.

On 31st October, 1917 Private Alfred James Fordham, Service number 3773, embarked from Sydney on HMAT Euripides (A14) with the 56th Infantry Battalion, 10th Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 26th December, 1917.
He was marched in to 14th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire from Australia on 27th December, 1917.

Private Fordham was sent sick to Group Clearing Hospital at Codford, Wiltshire on 4th February, 1918 with possible TB. He was admitted to the Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 12th February, 1918 – illness “N.Y.D.” (Not yet determined).

Private Alfred James Fordham died at 12.30 a.m. on 24th February, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Tuberculosis Generalised.

He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 WW1 Australian Nurses are laid to rest.
