Oscar joined the 5th Division Signal Corps and with his unit embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A 19 Afric on 9 June 1916, arriving at Stafford, England on 27 July. The unit proceeded to France on 4 September. Oscar was appointed Acting Lance Corporal on 26 July 1917, Corporal on 30 September 1918 and Temporary Sergeant on 25 January 1919. He continued to serve with his the 5th Division Signal Corps in France throughout the duration of the war. Oscar returned to Australia on the Euripides on 6 September and was discharged on 4 December.
