Private John Ina Jackson (Service no. 5701) was born on 12 April 1892 at Windsor, England, to William and Eliza Jackson (née Mears). He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Rockhampton on 31 January 1916, stating his occupation as clerk and nominating his mother as next of kin. He embarked for overseas service with the 15th Battalion aboard HMAT Seang Choon on 4 May 1916. After further training in England, he proceeded to France in late September 1916 and marched into the Australian base depot at Etaples on 1 October 1916.
While serving on the Western Front, Jackson developed trench foot in early 1917 while stationed in the Etaples area. He was evacuated sick in January 1917 and treated in hospitals at Calais and in England. His service records show repeated hospital admissions and periods of reduced medical classification. He returned to duty in France in mid-1917 and continued to alternate between active service, hospitalisation, and convalescence through late 1917 and early 1918. He was granted leave to the United Kingdom in August 1918 and later returned to France, remaining on service through the Armistice.
In January 1919 Jackson embarked from Havre for Australia aboard the troopship Port Napier, arriving at Port Melbourne on 4 July 1919. He was subsequently discharged from the Australian Imperial Force.
Jackson married Ivy May Thompson on 28 June 1922; she died in 1932 aged forty. He later married Winifred Mabel Pinner in November 1940. Between 1941 and 1943 the couple lived in Wharf Street, Brisbane, where Jackson was employed as a packer. In 1953 he was working as a shop assistant at Brookfield, Brisbane.
Private John Ina Jackson died in Brisbane on 22 October 1953, aged sixty-one. He was buried in Monumental Portion 10 at Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane, with his wife Winifred, who predeceased him in November 1945. A family notice placed after his death read: “Not just today, but every day, in silence we remember.”
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
