William Allen Porter was born on the 12th of January 1891 in Dublin, South Australia, a small farming town. He worked as a labourer before enlistment.

On 7 December 1914, Porter enlisted for the Australian Imperial Force, aged 23. His sister, Miss G Porter, was his nominated next of kin.

In February 1915, Porter left Australia and sailed for Egypt. Porter served in the later stages of Gallipoli with the 9th Light Horse before being sent back to Egypt at the end of 1915. He served in the Middle East during 1916.

In March 1917 he attended School of Cookery in Moascar from 14 March - 5 April. In June he was deprived from one day’s pay because of disobedience. In July he was hospitalised because of an infection for 38 days before being discharged to duty. He remained in the Middle East for the remainder of the war. After the war ended he was hospitalised in early 1919 with Pharyngitis and then spent time in rest camp before embarking to return to Australia 17 July 1916. He was discharged 22nd October 1919.

Porter marrked Margaret Violet O'Toole (1892-1930) in 1922 together they had two children Joan and Kevin. Porter died in 1985 and is buried at Centennial Park Cemetery.
