Carrie Bowden Whittingham was the daughter of Henry and Eleanora Whittingham of Kiama, New South Wales. Her dad had passed away in 1900 and her mother during 1911. Carrie had worked as Matron at the Kiama Cottage Hospital and the Grenfell Hospital, prior to her enlisting in October 1915. She was not a young woman, at 45 years of age, but served overseas in Egypt, England and in Rouen, France throughout 1916-1918. She was promoted to Sister from Staff Nurse during October 1918. When Carrie enlisted, she gave her brother David Whittingham as next of kin.
Her brother, 6121 Private David Whittingham 13th Battalion AIF was killed in action at Stormy Trench near Gueudecourt, France on 4 February 1917, at 43 years of age.
Carrie was married to Ivan Francis McCarthy in 1926. He was a New Zealand returned soldier, who possibly suffered with wounds as he died in the Prince of Wales Military Hospital, Randwick, at only 48 years of age.
