Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Roy Whitcombe Coutts was born in Ballarat, Victoria and a grain broker by occupation, when he enlisted on the 4 of August 1915. He served with the 57th Battalion and rose to the rank of sergeant before he began flying training. Little is known of his service with the RFC except that it was noted in a newspaper that he had taken part in air operations during the Battle of Cambrai. Somehow, he ended as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 7th Bedford Infantry Regiment and during early 1918 was captured unwounded by the Germans and made prisoner. He was safely repatriated to England and he made application for War Leave Gratuity during December 1918.
