William Porter was nearly 37 years old and had been married to Mary (Minnie) Cordon since 1909 when he enlisted at Ipswich NSW in February 1917. He was 5'10" (178cm) tall and weighed 163lbs (74kg), and had blue eyes, fair hair and fair complexion.

His parents were John Barwick Porter and Sarah (nee Jackson) Porter. John was a police trooper in Yongala South Australia.
