Thomas Francis Doughty was born in 1888, in Tumbarumba New South Wales, Australia.

 
Thomas enlisted for the war, aged twenty-six, on the 24th August 1914, his regimental number was 2837. At the time of Thomases enlistment he was single and worked as a labourer. Thomas had previously served His Majesty for 3 years in no.3 Battery, New South Wales. He listed his mother, Mrs. R Doughty, as his next of kin. Thomas's rank of enlistment was driver for the unit named Divisional Ammunition Column No. 3 section. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 20th October 1914.
