Richard Alexander Lawrie was born on 18th July, 1897, at Maitland, New South Wales, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John William Lawrie. He was educated at the Scots College, Sydney, and entered the service of the Bank at Casino, New South Wales, on 19th July, 1915. He was transferred to Bangalow, as assistant, in the following October. Richard Lawrie enlisted on 7th January, 1916, in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, A.I.F. He saw service in Sinai, Palestine and Syria from October, 1916, up to the signing of the Armistice, and won promotion to corporal.
