Date unknown: Involvement Enlisted at the age of 19 on 7 Jan 1915 for the 11th Light Horse, but deserted in Australia before embarkation on 16 April 1915. Stated that he had previous service as a Senior Cadet for 2 years 18 months with the 28th Engineers. Enlisted for second time on 4 Oct 1916 to the 32nd Battalion (No. 4344). Embarked Afric 7 Nov 1916 and disembarked Plymouth 9 Jan 1917. Promoted to A/Lance Corporal 10 Feb 1917, and proceeded to France, via Folkestone 6 Apr 1917 and joined 32nd Btn. (10th Reinforcements). Reverted to Private by 10 Jun 1917. To Hospital 10 Jun 1917 sick and transferred to England from 3rd Stationary Hospital Rouen on 20 Jun 1917 to Richmond Military Hospital on 22 Jun 1917 with pleurisy. Discharged back to France on 24 Oct 1917 and rejoined unit 11 Nov 1917. Admitted to General Military Hospital Colchester 5 May 1918 gassed on 25 Apr 1918. Transferred to IOM Section for a Course of Instruction 19 Jul 1918, possibly Aust. Army Ordinance Corps at Woolwich. Appointed Private (Turner) 4 Sep 1918 and posted to France per SS Arundel from Folkestone on 24 Sep 1918. Granted leave from 19 May 1919 to 30 Sep 1919 and returned to 32nd Btn on cancellation of leave 19 Aug 1919 and returned to Australia on the Raranga 19 Aug 1919 and discharged 11 Dec 1919.
