Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of William and Mary Rose.

PRIVATE JOHN ROSE.
The sad news was conveyed on Saturday evening by the Rev. Crookston to Mrs. M. Rose, widow of the late W. Rose, 141 Wattle-street, that her third son, Private John (Jack) Rose, previously reported as missing, had been killed in action on 4th October, "somewhere in France." Deceased, who was only 20 years of age, sailed with reinforcements of the  6th Battalion on 28th January, 1916. He was wounded whilst taking part in the battle of Pozieres, and was in the hospital for six weeks. On recovery he was again sent to the front, and  up to the time of his death had had no leave.

Prior to enlisting he was employed at Swallow and Ariel's, Melbourne, and before that he was employed by Scholten Bros. and the Bendigo City Council. He has an elder brother, Private W. S. Rose, who enlisted from Western Australia, and is now on active service in France.
