John Ryan was born sometime in August 1889 in Southwark (Thebarton), South Australia. He lived in East Street, Torrensville when he enlisted.

John Ryan eventually decided to sign up for the AIF on the 17th of February 1915 at the age of 25. He was 5 foot 6 ½, 136 lbs when he enlisted. He became a part of the 27th Infantry Battalion with many other South Australians. He embarked from Australia on board the HMAT A2 Geelong on the 31st of May 1915.

During his service he was reported absent from leave multiple times but was still recorded as a ‘good’ character on his discharge report. He travelled throughout many countries because he was admitted to hospital so many times throughout his service. This was predominantly due to some mild heart problems that he experienced. He travelled through multiple provinces of France and parts of England.

He disembarked on the 21st of September 1917 and eventually returned back to Australia. On the 26th of October 1917 he was discharged from service due to being medically unfit. He was suffering from rheumatism He received a pension at a new address in Smith Street, Southwark after he was discharged.

According to RSL records his wife was Ella Coraline Ryan and his sister was Margaret Richards. He died in 1960.
