Add my storyBiography contributed by St Ignatius' College
He was born in England in April 1887 but moved to Australia on 19th January 1912 as an immigrant. He enlisted on 24th February 1915 and fought for the Australian Imperial Force. Reginald Ames parents were stated in his will and in the enlistment form. His mother was Ellen Ames, who must have moved to Australia with Reginald from England. Her address is shown as South Road, Edwardstown, South Australia. His father was Robert John Ames, who the records show lived in Donsfold, Godalming, Surrey, England.
His service number was 497 and his rank was a Private with the 27th Australian Infantry Battalion. The 27th Battalion was raised in South Australia in March 1915, from recruits previously earmarked for the 24th Battalion. A large number of them came from the suburbs of Adelaide. The battalion left Australia in June, on the HMAT Geelong A2 and after two months spent training in Egypt, landed at Gallipoli on 12th September, 1915.
Time in hospital and days without pay:
Records show he first became unwell with a virus called Enteritis, which is much like gastro while in Gallipolli, on 22nd October 1915 and was transferred to Addington Park War Memorial Hospital in Croydon, England for treatment on 25th October 1915. He was discharged after 24 hours. He became unwell again with Enteritis on 8th November 1915 and was admitted to University War Hospital in Southhampton, England. This time he stayed in hospital for 23 days, getting discharged on 30th November 1915.
He was found under the influence of alcohol in hospital, was awarded 48 hours of detention and lost 2 days pay. On 2nd March 1916 he was absent without leave for 16 days, was awarded 12 days of detention and had to forfeit 28 days of pay. On 16th July 1916, he overstayed leave until 25th July 1916 and had to forfeit 9 days of pay. On 13th August 1916, Reginald Ames was admitted to Fargo Military hospital for Paraphimosis, which is a condition that affects men’s private parts. It must have been a bad condition and probably painful as he was absent from duty for 118 days. On 18th January 1916, Reginald Ames was found to be absent without leave at rollcall at 6pm. On 6th September 1916, he broke out of camp and remained absent until 14th September 1916. He got 8 days detention and forfeited 15 days pay.
Events leading up to his death:
On 17th January 1917, Reginald Ames was taken to Rollestone in England after being discharged from Bulford Military Hospital. From there he embarked the SS Arundel on 4th February 1917 to go to France. On 28th June 1917 he detached for duty at the 2nd Division Canteen. Private Reginald Ames was killed in action in Belgium on 29th March 1918, and buried at Motor Car Corner Cemetary in Wallonie, Belgium. He was just 32 years old when he died. His name is on panel 109 in the commemorative area on the AWM.
