James enlisted in the 32nd Battalion and left Fremantle on board the Port Melbourne on 31 October 1916, reaching Devonport, England on 28 December. He went to France with his battalion on 20 March 1917 and in August was docked 17 days’ pay for being absent without leave. This was a very common occurrence among Australian soldiers.
Suffering from myalgia, arthritis and trench fever, James was admitted to hospital on 10 August 1917, later being sent to England for further treatment of his trench fever condition. This led to James’ repatriation to Australia on the Balmoral Castle on 1 February 1918 and his discharge on 8 April
