Add my storyBiography
Henry was the fourth of seven children. He was born in Bolton, England, and came to Australia in 1911. He lied about his age on this enlistment papers, saying he was a year older than he actually was. His older brother Robert had been in the 49th Battalion and was killed at Messines six months before Henry enlisted. He lived in Thompsons Estate, South Brisbane, and his parents named their house Messines in honour of Robert. Henry was given military training in Fovant, Wiltshire, England and on 8 August 1918 he left England for Belgium.
He never talked about his experiences. He was funny, liked playing cards, and was proud of being born in Lancashire.
