Private Arthur Cohen (Service No:418) enlisted in the AIF on 24 February 1915 and embarked with 17th Infantry Battalion on 12 May 1915 from Sydney on board HMAT Themistocles A32. Private Cohen embarked from Suez on 2 September 1915 bound for Melbourne on board Ulysses and was Discharged (medical) on 5 November 1915.
Born in 1892 in Sydney NSW, Arthur was the youngest of six children of Maurice (Moses) Abraham Cohen (b1851 in the Ukraine) and Deborah Grouse (b1850 in Poland). Moses went to England to study at Jews' College London, and worked as a Teacher before travelling to India where he was Headmaster at Sassoon School in Bombay while taking a Degree at Bombay University. He then served as personal translator for General Roberts (Commander of British Forces in Afghanistan during the Second Anglo Afghan War). Moses (a Teacher) and Deborah married at Central Synagogue in London in 1883 and in 1887 moved with their family to Sydney NSW. Moses was Headmaster of the Jewish Sunday School in Sydney and Head of the NSW Jewish Board of Education. He lectured in Hebrew, was fluent in and taught a number of languages and was recognised world wide as an expert in Urdu.
Arthur worked as a Clerk in Sydney NSW where in 1915 he married Dorothy Rose O'Keefe. Following their Divorce in 1938, Arthur remarried to Lillian Esther Mayo (nee Gilchrist). Arthur died in 1938 and Lillian in 1966.
