Biography contributed by Heathfield High School
Arthur was born in Wallaroo, SA, in 1885. His hometown Moonta, Copper Coast, SA, and was previously a farmer before enlisting. On Arthurs’s Australian Imperial Force documents in March 1916 he has stated that he was not married. It is unknown if ever did marry after that. Arthur’s father was Mr john Arthur Moonda. His religion was Methodist
Arthur enlisted in in the WW1 conflict in Adelaide on the 11th of May 1916 and was 31.5 years old. Arthur being around 31 years old was on the older side of recruits for WW1, as recruits had to be 18 to 35 years of age. Arthur's enlistment information was, AIF WW1, Private, 50th Infantry Battalion.
Around 4pm on the 29th of September 1918, Arthur was walking along the Rue National Boulogne, with Morris Peter. Arthur and Morris were walking along the footpath, arthur being the closest to the road however a little behind Morris. Arthur stepped of the footpath onto a train line to let a women pass. At the same time Morris heard a train coming and shouted to Arthur to look out. Unfortunately Arthur seamed to not hear Morris as he did not get out of the way in time before the train struck. Once the train had hit Arthur the train dragged him a few paces along the road. Morris helped to pick him up and took him to the American Red Cross headquateres and later into an ambulance to 13 General hospital. In Morris’s opinion this injury was purely accidental.
Arthur survived this incident and 55 years later on the 15th July 1974, Arthur passed away.
