Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 19th May 1916, Private John Cantello, referred to as Jack, 17th Battalion (Reg No-3488), clerk from 272 Bridge Road, Forest Lodge, New South Wales, died from cerebrospinal fever, 11.30 p.m., No.7 General Hospital, St. Omer, France, age-26.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 10th April 1890 to George Christian (died 8.6.1942, Concord, N.S.W., age?) and Margaret Ann Cantello (died 18.7.1956, Ashfield, N.S.W., age?) of "Lonbridge", Walker Avenue, Haberfield, New South Wales and 45 Stanton Road, Haberfield, N.S.W.; grandson of John Henry (died 24.1.1911, Hexham, N.S.W., age 70) and Elizabeth Blundell (died 11.11.1910, Waratah, N.S.W., age 65) of Margaret Street, North Waratah, N.S.W., Jack enlisted on the 11th August 1915 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 20th December 1915.

Admitted to hospital 30.3.1916 (cerebrospinal fever, dangerously ill, very little hope of recovery).

Possibly laid to rest on the 20th May 1916 at Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France. Plot 3 Row B Grave 15.

Place of Association - Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Cantello’s name has been inscribed on the Crown Street Superior Public School War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Treasurer of the Surry Hills branch of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows. Name not inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised gravesite of Grandparents John Henry and Elizabeth Blundell in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their Grandson Jack for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-43. 40.
