Wallace left Fremantle on board the Port Melbourne on 30 October 1916, disembarking at Devonport, England on 28 December. He proceeded to France on the SS Golden Eagle on 28 February 1917. Contracting mumps resulted in Wallace being hospitalised for 5 weeks and rejoining his unit on 30 April. He was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal on 18 September and made a Sergeant in France on 11 January 1918.
Wallace was wounded in action on 29 September sustaining a gunshot to the left thigh which necessitated being invalided to England on 1 October and his wife informed on 11 October. He returned to Australia on the Bakara on 22 January 1919 and discharged on 22 March.
