IN LOVING MEMORY PEACE PERFECT PEACE AT REST
In a letter to the mother regarding her son, Private James Semple, Lieut. E. L. McLeod has this to say of the Footscray lad: "I thought it might lighten your sorrow perhaps at little if you knew the particulars of your son's death. He unfortunately was killed on the night of July, during a specially intense bombardment; but I am sure felt absolutely no pain. I found him at all times a splendid soldier, game, and always a volunteer for any ticklish job, and a man upon whom I could place absolute confidence. At the time he was on duty as an observer, and died as he lived while under my comnaNd, a true soldier. I would like you to know in the opinion of the other platoon Commanders and the Company Commandant, your son was a true Australian soldier, respected by his comrades."
