Private William Pettit (Service No:2281) enlisted in the AIF on 14 September 1914 - graded Driver - and was attached to 1st Australian Reserve Park Company 10 ASC on 29 October 1914 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Alexandria on board HMAT A26 Armadale. Private Pettit suffered heart problems, and embarked from Alexandria for England on 3 July 1915 on board HS Latitia. On 8 October 1915 Private Pettit was invalided to Melbourne, embarking from Plymouth on board HT Suevic, and was attached to 10th Army Service Corps at Permanent Guard Domain Camp in Melbourne when he was Discharged (Medically Unfit) on 29 March 1916.
William was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1882, eldest of four children of Frederick John Myers (aka William Pettett; b1851 in Fremantle, Western Australia) and his third wife Mary Caroline Frahm (b1853 in Germany) - Mary immigrated in 1854 with her parents and siblings on board the Steinwarder. William Snr (a Labourer) and Mary married in 1882 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and William worked as a Labourer until his death in 1888. Mary remarried.
William worked as a Seaman, and in Melbourne in 1904 married his first wife Ada May Elizabeth Prosser (b1884 in Melbourne, Victoria). William and Ada settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family, and William worked as a Seaman and Labourer, and was a Horse Driver when he enlisted in the Army in 1914. Following his Discharge in 1916, William returned to Melbourne and worked as a Horse Driver and Buider's Labourer. He and Ada divorced in 1920, and both remarried - William in 1921 to Helena (Nellie) Bremner (b1897 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Nellie was Factory Worker with two small sons. William and Nellie settled in Melbourne - William adopted both Nellie's sons - and they had one son together. William worked as a Builder's Labourer and a Seamnan until his death in 1935. Nellie died in 1971.
