Private Leopold Fairfield Dickinson (Service No:5695) enlisted in the AIF on 22 October 1914 and was attached to 1 Australian Reserve Park on 17 April 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for the Dardanelles on board HMAT A20 Hororata. Private Dickinson embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles on board the Ionian on 28 May 1915, and served on the Western Front. Private Dickinson embarked from England for Melbourne on 8 November 1918 on board HT Gaika, and was attached to 18 Australian Army Service Corps (AASC) Coy at Discharge on 1 March 1919. Both sons - Jack and Lindsay - served in WWII.
Leo was born in Fairfield, Victoria in 1893, youngest child of George William Dickinson (b1858 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Lucy Mills (b1865 at Emerald Hill in Melbourne, Victoria). George (a Railways Employee) and Lucy married in 1886 in Melbourne, and lived in Alberton, Warragul and Melbourne, where they raised their family and George was a Railways Employee.
Leo was working as a Labourer in Melbourne in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF and, following his Discharge, was a Watchman in Melbourne in 1920 when he married Irene Edith Emily Craig (b1892 in Launceston, Tasmania). In December 1921, Leo was awarded a Farm (wheat growing: Battle to Farm) at Koimbo in the Mallee region. By 1927, Leo and Lucy had settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Leo worked as a Brewery Employee, Cellarman and Council Employee. Leo died in 1961 and Lucy in 1978.
