Son of James and Margaret Stevenson Butters of 15 Lime Street, Skerton, Lancaster, England. Brother of David Reid Butters who returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 having served with the 13th Light Horse Regiment
Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal
He previously served for over 18 years in the Royal Scots Greys of the British Army, England reaching the rank of Sergeant at retirement. while serving with the British Army he also served in the Boer War
