Son of Ludwig Francis Vanselow and Elizabeth Ann Vanselow nee Davies of Chatham Road, Canterbury, Victoria. Brother of Leslie Ernest Vanselow who returned to Australia in early 1921 having served with the 5th and 22nd Battalions.

Commenced return to Australia on 16 March 1919 aboard HT Czaritza then transhipped to HT Dunluce Castle disembarking on 15 May 1919
