On 20 Jul 1916 whilst retiring from the 3rd line of German Trenches, the Germans counterattacked. They swarmed the trench and Frank received a severe gun shot wound to the Chest at approximately 5am. Frank was left for dead but was close enough to the Australian lines to be able to drag himself and another wounded soldier towards safety where they were able to be rescued by the Australians.
