Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Percy Charles Tuck (Reg No. 10328) was born 14th Aug 1892 in St Arnaud near Bendigo, the second son of Ernest Henry Tuck a  coachbuilder and his wife Martha. In 1910 at the age of 18 he was appointed a Probational Teacher 3rd Class at St Arnaud State School before being transferred on 10th Aug 1911 to King Street Primary School in West Melbourne – as a teacher 2nd Class. He was appointed to Teacher 1st Class April 1912. Percy transferred to the Allambee Hall School on 28th September 1913, and remained there until the  time of his enlistment in the Army Medical Corp on 16th August 1915. He was placed on leave by the Education Department to serve with the AIF from 1/9/1915 to 3/7/1919.

When Percy enlisted he was described as 5’6”, blue eyes and light brown hair. Following initial training he embarked from Melbourne on the Euripides on 4th April 1916 and on 31st July joined the 15th Field Ambulance. Percy returned to Australia on the Anchises and was discharged on the 17th April 1919.

Upon his return he resumed teaching at Brunswick West Primary School – Assistant on 2nd July 1919 before transferring to Torquay Primary school 20th September 1919. His Teacher Record of June 1921 would appear to indicate that he had lost his enthusiasm for teaching and he resigned as a Teacher in March 1922, taking up a new vocation, that of a gardener, living and working in the St Kilda/Elwood area.

In 1927 he married Jeannie Mackie and they went on to have a family of 6 children. Percy died February 1987 in Elwood.
