Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

At Sandgate Cemetery I recently placed a cross at the unmarked gravesite of a Russian born, 1st A.I.F. soldier of The Great War.

Sapper Nicholas Rodionoff, 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-5824), carpenter and coal miner from Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 25th September 1948, age 64. GENERAL-33. 17.

No funeral or death notice located.

Born at Perm, Russia about 1883 to parents’ unknown, husband of N Rodionoff of Tomsk, Siberia, Russia, Nicholas enlisted June 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies Reinforcements at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 21.2.1917 (mumps), 9.10.1918 (GSW hip, right arm, accidental), and wounded in action - 8.4.1918 (gas), Nicholas returned home September 1919, being discharged on the 13th October 1919.

The tragic circumstances of Mr. Rodionoff’s death were reported.  His service record states Died 20th September 1948 (in his hut at Dutchmans Beach, Nelsons Bay, N.S.W.)

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, to restore Honour and Dignity to Nicholas.

Any further information would be greatly appreciated.
Lest We Forget.
