Uncle Gabriel Ferrett service no4776

I have wonderful memories of my mothers fondness for her favourite Uncle Gabriel she remembers seeing him walking up the street when he arrived home ,she said she got such a shock when she saw that he only had one leg ,he had lost it and that was the reason he had been discharged. Uncle Gabe as he was known was my Grandfathers brother and I never knew him I would have been delighted to have known him but still feel very proud that he was my Great Uncle.Anne Harwood.

Biography contributed

Gabriel Ferrett was born at Manly in 1887, son of Leon Ferrett, who kept the Ladies' Baths. He was a fisherman prior to enlisting. He enlisted on 26 August 1915, aged 29. He  served with the 54th Battalion at Fleurbaix, where he was wounded by shellfire and taken prisoner of war. He was later exchanged, and had his leg amputated. He was discharged  on 16 July 1917 and returned to Australia by Hospital Ship no 2.

Army records have his middle name as 'Alphouse'.

He married Gladys M Taylor at Manly in 1920. Manly Daily 15 September 1917 reported that Gabriel Ferret, recently repatriated, had lost a leg when on observation duty in a  trench recaptured from the Germans. He operated a fishmonger's business on Manly Wharf. He lived at 'Lorraine', Dudley Street. He died on 16 August 1935, and was buried at  Manly Cemetery Plot Y148.
