Marched into Pioneer Training Bn, Larkhill, 6 March 1917; proceeded on command to Pioneer School, Fovant, 9 May 1917; awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 5 June 1917. Citation reads: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has consistently shown a fine example of courage and coolness under fire, and has performed good and valuable service throughout'.

Proceeded to France through Southampton, 9 July 1917; marched into 5th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Havre, 10 July 1917; moved into the field, 31 July 1917; rejoined unit in the field, 1 August 1917; detached to Pioneer Training Bn, 1 December 1917. Marched into Pioneer Training Bn, Larkhill, 4 December 1917; moved out to detached working party, 22 January 1918; rejoined unit from working party, 5 February 1918; marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 8 March 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suevic', 21 April 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 7 June 1918.

Discharged Melbourne, 23 August 1918.

Returned to Australia 21 April 1918
