Ernest left Adelaide on the HMAT Geelong on 31 May 1915. After the completion of further training in England he went to France with the 27thBattalion on 15 March 1916. He continued fighting in France with the 27th for the duration of the war. Ernest returned to Australia on the Port Macquarie on 28 March 1919 and was discharged on 21 July.
