Clarence was the son of Michael and Mary O’Brien [nee Thompson]. With his
unit, Clarence left Adelaide on the A16 Port Melbourne on 23 October 1916.
Eczema of the right foot plagued his war service as did bouts of being absent
without leave for which he was placed in detention for 42 days and docked 75
days’ pay. While in England he married Ethel Caxton on 14 December 1917. He
saw the war out serving in the United Kingdom and returned to Australia on
the Sardinia on 19 October 1918, being discharged on 18 January 1919.
