A Forgotten Digger of The Great War and Sandgate Cemetery.
86 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 29th December 1933, Private John Fullick, 54th Battalion, wheeler from James Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and Turton Road, Waratah, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 42. ANGLICAN 2-127. 35.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 20th March 1891 (as FULLICKS) to Henry and Mary Elizabeth Fullick; husband of Alma Charlotte Fullick nee Gudshus (married 1914, died?) of 115 Denison Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, John enlisted November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 23.9.1917 (gas shell poisoning - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article138736478), 1.9.1918 (GSW right shoulder - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article137487909), John arrived back in Australia on the 24th March 1919 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139650221, arrived home 4th April 1919 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139653940, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139648333.

Also known as Jasper, his name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial (photos, Panel 2, unveiled on the 20th May 1922 as J FULLICKS), Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor and the Rose of Hamilton Lodge, G.U.O.O.F. Roll of Honour (location unknown).

Mr Fullick had died at the Newcastle Hospital on the 27th December 1933 from meningitis and a skull fracture (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139878537, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article165072823, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139891288) and had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite 25th April 2017, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Another example of a returned soldier dying from his war service injuries and alcohol, now forgotten.
Lest We Forget.
