Sapper William Lamb #1467
Sapper William Lamb was my paternal grandfather. Born in Troon Ayrshire (Scotland) in 1887 he emigrated to Australia in 1910 with his wife Janet and baby daughter Agnes. The family lived in Fremantle for several years and my father Andrew was born there in 1913. Work being scarce in the West a relative in Queensland suggested they move to Brisbane. In Scotland, William had been a railway employee and carpenter and it was as the latter that he found employment in their new home-state. The family resided at Peterson Street, South Brisbane.
It was against his wife Janet's wishes that William, who had served in the volunteers in Scotland, enlisted in Brisbane on 7th February 1917. On joining he stood 5' 5 1/2" inches tall, was 30 years and 4 months old and weighed 145 lbs. His religion was listed as C/E.
On 14th February his Commanding Officer assigned him to the 4th Railway Unit.
Photographs show William in camp at Broadmeadows. To be continued.....
