Rudolph Bernhardt Wachtel

Rudy was born near Caloote on December 16th 1897, and he received his education at the Mobilong School. Afterwards he assisted his parents Anna Louise Hulda Wachtel (nee Kubenk) and Johann Gotthard Richard Wachtel at Cooke's Hill, and later when they settled on the dairy farm at Mannum. Rudy remained a bachelor, spending most of his life at Mannum.

During WW1, Rudy enlisted in the A.I.F. at the age of 20yrs, and was posted overseas. Rudy served 246 days Total Service with 102 days served abroad. After discharge from the Army, Rudy carried on farming on the home property. Later he retired to a small home by the riverside at Mannum, continuing his hobby of fishing.

Rudy died on February 26th 1978, aged 80 years.

" SISTER AND BROTHERS SHOT AT MANNUM"
In August 1931 Rudy then aged 34yrs and his older brother Alex Wachtel aged 35 yrs were both shot at their Mannum farm while defending their 26 year old sister Agnes "Myrtle" Wachtel. Myrtle had been attacked and shot with a revolver by a labourer who worked occasionally on the Wachtel farm. Both brothers survived their injuries, however Myrtle died 3 days later.
