Enlisting on the 29th of September, 1916, Wesley Curnow stated that he was single, a farmer and 20 years old. He embarked on HMAT Afric, assigned to the 17th Reinforcements of the 27th Battalion, on the 6th of November, 1916.
He arrived at Plymouth and went straight to the Salisbury Plains for further training on the 9th of January, 1917. Wesley was admitted to hospital in February with Bronchitis and was discharged from hospitial on the 10th of March, 1917. He then completed his trainging before heading overseas to France in May. He was taken on strength by the 27th Battalion on the 12th of June, 1917 near the Bullecourt Region. However, in July Wesley took ill and was sent back to England for further medical treatment and recouperation. He only rejoined the 27th Battalion on the 8th of November, 1917.
Then on the 10th of June, 1918 while Wesley was still serving with the 27th Battalion near Sailly-Le-Sec he was wounded in the chest serverly by shrapnel. He was evacuated to England where he stayed until he had recovered in August of 1918. In November he boarded a vessel to Australia. Wesley Curnow was discharged on the 9th of May, 1919 as medically unfit.
