86 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 17th May 1938, Private William Cowan, referred to as Willie and Moucher, 35th Battalion (Reg No-750), coal trimmer (Dyke & Basin, Carrington, N.S.W.), from William Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 25 Bourke Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 54. ANGLICAN 2-148. 7.

Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 17th September 1883 to James, died 3.11.1899, Wickham, N.S.W., age?, buried at ANGLICAN 1-36. 74, unmarked grave, from Little Young Street, Carrington, N.S.W., and Mary Cowan, died 28.6.1901, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-36. 76, unmarked grave, buried on the Sunday of the 30.6.1901, no funeral notice; husband of Amy?, also Grace Margaret Cowan nee Judd (married 1925, Sydney, N.S.W., died 6.12.1936, Wollongong, N.S.W., age?, sleeping here, name not listed on Sandgate Cemetery or Find a Grave databases, name possibly inscribed on headstone, now faded), Willie enlisted on the 8th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (GSW head, hand, right arm & thigh, severe, Battle of Messines).

Transferred to England 20.6.1917.

Granted furlough to England from 15.8.1917 to 29.8.1917.

Commenced return to Australia 9.12.1918.

Willie arrived home invalided on the 23rd January 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 3rd March 1919.

Mr. Cowan’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name probably inscribed on the Adamstown Masonic Lodge, Star in the West (No. 189) Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at Willie’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother James Henry Cowan (born 15.4.1887, Carrington, New South Wales, coal trimmer from 7 Little Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales, enlisted 24.11.1915, Newcastle Training Camp, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., Reg No-none, discharged medically unfit - 20.1.1916 (heart disease), died 26.5.1922, age 35 - not officially commemorated), buried at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 1-64. 04.
